My name is Sherry Peterson, I am 42 years old. I am a Food Service Manager for A.A. county public schools, a wife and a mother of 2 adult girls from Kent Island.
My best friend was telling about classes and suggested I join her at Glendale Elem. I left her house and called her 20 minutes later to get the information. I discussed it with my husband that evening and he thought I should give it a try because I am a gym drop out. I never stuck with any gym or diet plans for too long. I was also trying to control diabetes and high cholesterol. I had just accepted I was going to be a large girl and figured that was going to be my life.
I had no idea what to expect on the first day. I was scared!! The work out ended up being better than I thought but still hard. I thought I would never make it through a week, let alone a month or more. I shed a lot of tears the first month on the drive home thinking I would never be able to walk again. I also worried that the other ladies were always way ahead of me in everything. I learned really quickly from the coach and ladies who cheer me on, that it didn’t matter how long the workout took me just as long as I was finishing! I love that when you look around the room at the gym or at Glendale it never feels competitive.
I was diagnosed with Diabetes and high cholesterol in June 2015. When I started in January2016, I decided if I did nothing else for myself, I was going to beat them both. I am proud to say I received a letter from my doctor saying my counts were where they needed to be and that she was impressed I was able to lower them so quickly and have maintained. My other goal was to strength my ankle. I broke my ankle 5 years ago and recently had the hardware removed. My husband bought me a Harley several years ago and I haven’t been able to hold the bike because of the weakness. He sold that bike, but has since bought me a larger bike and on Mother’s day I went for my first ride in 3 years! It felt amazing.
My goals now are to continue to build on everything that I have changed. I would like to be able to do double unders and a little higher on box jumps.
I feel better than i have in years. My family is sometimes scared by my energy level. My attitude is better and my stress level is at an all-time low!
I have become a lot more active and I can actually get down on the floor to play with my grand-daughter. I feel good about myself and the changes I have been making in my life style and eating.
I don’t think I could just pick one moment as my favorite. I look forward to the time I get to spend with all the ladies of Glendale Elementary. The ladies have been so supportive and have become great friends! I also enjoy being at the gym. But if I had to pick one, it would be during Spring Break when my 7 year old niece out rowed me on the rowing machine.
