Richard Doerfler: Stronger state of mind

I was half way through a two year plan I put myself on to lose an obscene amount of weight. My plan was to focus on my diet the first year and then work on my physical fitness the second year. You opened two doors down from my office right at the start of my second year. In all honesty, I don’t think I would have followed my plan had Wreck Room not opened. I was smoking and getting lax with my diet, but then you came along and started bumming my shop equipment to set up the Wreck Room. Serendipity at its finest.

My first impression of CrossFit was that it was IMPOSSIBLE!

What has changed is the realization that it takes A LOT of work to find your limits, physically, mentally, and otherwise. It’s easy to look at something and think ‘I can’t do that,’ but in reality it requires an extreme amount of effort to actually find out what you can’t do. This perspective has changed my life, not just my thoughts on CrossFit.

The first goal I hit was to RX a workout. But my two most satisfying goals were RX-ing Fran the first time and beating the coach in a legitimate wod.

I’m in a different place now, not just geographically, and unfortunately CrossFit hasn’t been a priority or a focus for me in recent months. So one goal is to get back at it in an aggressive manor, but also maintain my strength, mobility, and balance by running, biking, backpacking, and the typical push-ups, burpees, sit-ups, other bodyweight work.

It’s tough to say what has changed the most.  My inclination is to say my physical activity, appearance, ability, etc, but I really think it’s my state of mind. Challenges are now met with enthusiasm and not fear or dread.

My favorite Wreck Room moment?  Again that’s a tough one. I could list many, but I’ll list only three.

Best personal moment :

100 front squat WOD I worked out at 7pm after a 13 hour day. It was one other person and me. I was one of three who even tried to RX it. I didn’t want to workout that day but I wanted the challenge of that WOD. Toughest WOD I did and loved every second of hating it!

Best group moment :

12 days of Christmas WOD. That was a blast. The workout, the food, the camaraderie of it all. Great moment.

Best Butch moment :

Too many to list. The support, guidance, encouragement, and example have formed one conglomerate memory resembling a euro-hawked, baby-step running CrossFit guru. Thanks for everything!
