My name is Kaitlyn Scardina and I’m from Glen Burnie, MD. I am a high school math teacher at Dundalk High School
Last summer (2016) my mom saw an ad for the 6 week New You Program and wanted to try it out. She asked me if I would do it with her so she wouldn’t be alone, so I said yes! I wasn’t able to continue after the 6 weeks due to coaching soccer in the fall and taking two graduate courses so I stopped. I got an email in May advertising the New You Program again so I decided to sign up again and I was determined to stay this time. I did and I’ve been working out ever since!
I wasn’t sure what to expect coming in the first time. I had seen CrossFit competitions on TV and thought some of the stuff was crazy. I’ve heard people say how CrossFit isn’t healthy for you and I was worried about being judged because I hadn’t lifted weight before. Once I started, I saw that I had nothing to worry about. Everyone was encouraging, supportive, and helpful. The coaches make sure that you are doing the movements correctly and teach you the proper ways to do the lifts. I am glad I came back and have stuck with it!
My first goal was to lose some weight to prepare for my wedding. Over the past few years I had gained weight and was unhappy with the way I felt and looked. I wanted to try and lose at least 15 lbs. Since I started I was able to accomplish this goal and more by losing 20lbs!!
Now, my new goal is to be able to do a pull-up. I’ve never been able to do one that was unassisted, so I’m pretty excited about trying to accomplish this one. Compared to when I started I am stronger and have more stamina and energy.
The biggest change for me has been my weight. I didn’t realize how big of a difference 20lbs could make. All of my clothes fit me better or they’re too big! I’m also starting to get leaner and I’m starting to see muscles forming!
So far my favorite moment was the In-House Throwdown! I had a lot of fun and I loved the atmosphere. It was awesome seeing all the people cheering and encouraging each other.
